Fridges and Freezers: Film Stars
You might not think it, but there are actually quite a few films in which fridges or freezers have had starring roles (well, relatively speaking). If you don’t believe me (or even if you do) go ahead and take a look at the following list of movie gems featuring fridges, freezers or a fridge freezer in some capacity or another.
The Snowman
A rather festive British animation. The story details the adventures of a young boy and his sentient snowman, the pair going on a variety of adventures including soaring across snow-covered fields, a snowman party and meeting Father Christmas. The snowman himself sleeps in a chest freezer as if it were a bed. All good things must come to an end, however, and the snowman melts the next morning, leaving only his scarf (a present from Father Christmas) behind.
Stars Wars
The link to freezers may not be immediately obvious in George Lucas’s epic space opera (though it soon will be). In The Empire Strikes Back Darth Vader holds Luke’s friends hostage, intending to use them as bait. Vader plans on freezing Luke in carbonite (not previously used for storing humans) in order to keep him nice and fresh upon his delivery to the Emperor. The task of testing the carbonite freezing chamber falls to Han Solo, who is then given to Jabba the Hutt by bounty hunter Boba Fett.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
The incident in this film is quite notorious due to its sheer unlikeliness. Although it’s pointed out that the fridge in question is lined with lead it would still be unlikely to survive the blast intact, and Indy himself would have most probably been killed by being banged about inside the fridge itself. This led to the creation of the phrase “nuking the fridge”, essentially meaning the same as television’s “jumping the shark”.
